SAFE AND EASY PROFESSIONAL EAR WAX REMOVAL

EAR WAX REMOVAL IS A NATURAL BODY PROCESS

Trying to clean the ears by yourself may cause more trouble than it’s worth. Think of the ears as self-cleaning ovens – when the outer layer of the skin in the ear canal sheds, the ear wax will naturally fall out with it. However, this mechanism does not really apply to all. In that case, professional earwax removal may be the solution.

EARWAX IS ACTUALLY NECESSARY

Yes, that yellow, sticky thing inside your ears is a natural product of the ear that is produced for a special reason. The ears are made to produce ear wax, also known as cerumen, to protect the ears from bacteria, fungus and foreign objects that could possibly hurt the ears like hair, debris, small insects, dust, etc. The common misconception about ear wax is that it is dirty and needs to be cleaned regularly. But of course, take heed, all things in the world need balance and moderation. Having too much earwax can affect hearing health – it can cause temporary hearing loss or bring along infections. Doctors have observed that earwax problems seem to be more common in patients with a smaller-than-average ear canal. Don’t be so confident though, as people with big ears may still need to undergo professional ear wax removal.

CERUMEN
“Cerumen” is just another name for ear wax, so ear cleaning cleaning is also called cerumen removal.

QUESTIONS ABOUT EAR WAX REMOVAL

Think of it this way – trying to get rid of impacted ear wax by yourself is just like trying to cut or style your own hair. You may get things done, but the results are not as awesome as when you have it done by a senior hair stylist.

Similarly, you can try and use cotton swabs, bobby pins, ear candles, etc. to get rid your ears of wax; just don’t expect to get optimum results. Worse, you could even harm your ears or poke your eardrum, making it prone to infection which may need even more medical attention.

That being said, hearing healthcare professionals do not recommend ear wax removal at home. It would be best to leave this intricate process to hearing doctors.

Each human body is unique, hence, ear wax production may vary from one person to another. If you are one of those people whose ears seem to have an additional wax factory, there are some do’s and don’t when it comes to ear wax removal that you need to learn.  We are here to help.

  •  Recurrent ear infections
  •  Previous ear trauma or surgery
  •  Wearing hearing aids or deep-seated ear plugs

All of the factors mentioned above clearly need regular evaluation by a hearing specialist. This is to ensure that ear care is continuously given to prevent a blockage which could lead to viruses or other serious ear trouble.

Earwax, at most, can be annoying more than threatening. If you’ve already tried home remedies without any sign of alleviation, it’s time to see an audiologist.

If you feel pain in your ears or if you seem to have trouble hearing, it’s high time to get checked by a hearing specialist called an audiologist and use their ear wax removal services. DIY is NOT the best way to deal with clogged earwax. A doctor needs to be able see the status of the ear canal – if it’s still open or totally clogged by earwax.

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO A HEARING CLINIC AND MY IMPACTED EARWAX IS REALLY BUGGING ME?

There are times when our schedule just can’t accommodate going to a hearing clinic ASAP. If your earwax is really posing to be a nuisance, you can try to alleviate the problem with this home treatment.

Take note that DIY ear wax removal treatments may not be as effective as the procedure done in a clinic. Also, stick to the guidelines or instructions to make sure that you won’t add any problems to your hearing.

Let’s start with over-the-counter ear cleaning drops: This MAY usually work for people who only have a small amount of wax in the ears. Choose an ear cleaning product that contains hydrogen or similar kinds of peroxide. Peroxide is known to do a good job in cleaning or breaking up ear wax.

LAY SIDEWAYS

Ensure that the ear you intend to rid of wax is facing up. Add the drops as directed. It would be good to have some napkins or washcloth near you just in case the drops fall on your face or neck.

LET IT SIT

Lay on your side for at least five minutes to let it soak. This is to ensure that the drops soak and soften the earwax.

CLEAN IT AWAY

Have a napkin or paper towel ready for when you sit up. The solution, along with loosened earwax, will drip so be ready to wipe it up.

WHAT IF EAR CLEANING DROPS DON’T WORK?

If you’ve already lucked out with ear cleaning drops, you may need to try another strategy while waiting for your ear wax removal appointment with a hearing specialist.

The other strategy that we’re talking about is flushing with a bulb syringe. Guidelines on performing flushing with a bulb syringe:Be gentle.Make sure the water temperature is just right – having it too hot or too cold may cause dizziness.DO NOT use this method if you’ve had ear surgery or you have a hole in your eardrum.

If you are not comfortable in performing the ear flushing technique by yourself, you can try to go to your primary care provider’s clinic and have a nurse do it for you. But if you ask us, it would be best to go to an audiologist and have an expert do the ear wax removal for you while you sit back and relax.

It is worth noting that ear cleaning drops and ear flushing ARE NOT EFFECTIVE on heavily impacted cerumen. Applying peroxide on impacted earwax may make things worse because it will only soften the plug which might end up like a wall of messy mud that can clog the ears even more.

In short, professional ear wax removal by an audiologist is the best method to remove heavily, impacted ear wax.
Our friendly staff and highly-qualified audiologist will take care of your hearing needs and concerns. From ear wax removal to hearing aid selection, tinnitus treatment and custom-ear plugs fitting, PA Center for Hearing and Balance is a one-stop hearing haven here for you.
